    In this lecture, Harold Rosen MD, CCD, presents his cutting-edge research on the topic of bone densitometry in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. He provides insight into the correct terminology one must use when speaking about these individuals, discusses ways to appropriately screen and diagnose transgender individuals, and reviews guidelines for treatment in the most recent literature on the topic. This lecture is an excellent companion to the article titled "Bone Densitometry in Transgender and Gender Nonconforming (TGNC) Individuals: The 2019 ISCD Official Positions," also featured on the ISCD Learning Center.

  • Repeating Measurement of Bone Mineral Density When Monitoring with Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry

    This journal article covers the 2019 Positions of the ISCD on Monitoring Serial Bone Measures with DXA. It provides the most current, evidence-based practice guidelines for assessing if and when Bone Mineral Density (BMD) by DXA should be repeated, as determined by the 2019 Position Development Conference (PDC) Monitoring Serial Bone Measures with DXA Task Force.

    The ISCD periodically holds Position Development Conferences (PDCs)in which a panel of experts make recommendations based on reviews of scientific literature by specific task forces.In 2019 the PDC Monitoring Serial Bone Measures with DXA Task Force convened to assess if and when BMD by DXA should be repeated.  The outcome of this PDC was the 2019 Official Positions of the ISCD.  This activity aims to provide learners with the most current, evidence-based practice guidelines for assessing skeletal health so they may begin utilizing them in their clinical practice.

    Clinicians must be aware of the research and evidence that clarifies if and when BMD should be repeated so they may collect crucial information for patient management.  Clinicians must know how to incorporate changes to clinical recommendations, supported by evidence, to enhance the engagement of their patients and care providers in their osteoporosis management.

    This journal article covers the 2019 Positions of the ISCD on the clinical utility of repeating vertebral fracture assessment (VFA). It provides the most current, evidence-based practice guidelines for assessing if and when VFA should be repeated, as determined by the 2019 Position Development Conference (PDC) Monitoring Serial Bone Measures with DXA Task Force

    The ISCD periodically holds Position Development Conferences (PDCs) in which a panel of experts make recommendations based on reviews of scientific literature by specific task forces. In 2019 the PDC Monitoring Serial Bone Measures with DXA Task Force convened to review new medical evidence about the clinical utility of repeating vertebral fracture assessment (VFA).  The outcome of this PDC was the 2019 Official Adult Positions of the ISCD, specifically, ‘when should VFA be repeated?' This activity aims to provide learners with the most current, evidence-based practice guidelines for assessing skeletal health so they may begin utilizing them in their clinical practice.

    Clinicians must be familiar with the newly published 2019 ISCD Official Positions related to repeating VFA or radiographic lateral spine imaging.  Clinicians must be current and aware of the associated, current research that indicates when repeat VFA is recommended.  Further, clinicians must know how to implement the evidence-based, best-practice guidelines related to repeat VFA that includes imaging in patients with continued high risk, self-reported but undocumented VF, or daily (≥ 5 mg) glucocorticoid therapy for ≥ three months.

  • Using DXA in Pediatric Clinical Practice and Research

    David R. Weber, MD, MSCE, provides an evidence-based yet practical approach to using DXA in children for clinical care and research. He illustrates how he has used DXA in his own practice, and explains risk factors for impaired bone health in children as well as indications for using DXA in the pediatric population. Dr. Weber's lecture covers the key aspects of performing, analyzing and interpreting DXA in children.

    Clinicians must be familiar with the newly released 2019 ISCD Official Positions related to SCI individuals. Further, clinicians must know how to appropriately screen SCI individuals, how to appropriately diagnose, assess fracture risk and monitor response to osteoporosis therapy. By doing so, clinicians can appropriately manage these patients and ensure quality healthcare.

    Clinicians must be familiar with the known differences in BMD calibrations between manufacturers, as well as different scanners within a particular manufacturer’s product lines.  They must also be aware of differences in calibration within scanners of the same make and model, or with differences in software.  Clinicians must be familiar with the 2019 ISCD Official Positions related to cross-calibration so they know how to implement these best-practice guidelines in  their practice-setting to assure the precision error of the exam does not exceed the expected skeletal response to treatment, nor the validity of the scans.

This activity aims to provide learners with the most current, evidence-based practice guidelines for assessing skeletal health so they may begin utilizing them in their clinical practice. Clinicians must be aware of the use of DXA systems for the early detection of AFFs as well as the new ISCD Official Position statements related to this topic. Clinicians must know when and how to appropriately utilize DXA systems to detect abnormalities in the spectrum of AFF, utilizing the new practice guidelines released by the ISCD.
