It provides standard practices and applications to raise the quality of DXA scan procedures and their impact on patient care. The program is designed to enhance awareness of the technical expertise involved in performing bone densitometry and applying protocols to address the everyday challenges. Attendees with come away with a strong sense of the considerable impact that a technologist plays in the delivery of quality DXA, and how that influences patient management.

    Target Audience

The course is most appropriate for those involved in the performance of DXA scans and open to any health professional performing these scans.

    Learning Objectives

After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:

    1. Design and implement quality control and assurance practices.
    2. Perform a precision assessment and appreciate the requirement for clinical care.
    3. Identify the anatomy relevant to clinical DXA scanning.
    4. Implement consistent and appropriate technical acquisition and analysis techniques.
    5. Perform a fracture risk assessment using FRAX.
    6. Provide DXA interpreters sufficient information for a high-quality DXA report.
    7. Discuss supplemental software and their application.
    8. Demonstrate how to access features within the DXA software.
    9. Understand how specific medical conditions and medications affect bone density.
    10. Critically evaluate DXA scans to identify acquisition and analysis errors and implement resolution methods.
    11. Recognize how technical errors impact clinical interpretation and patient care.

    Course Description

This ISCD Orthopedic Densitometry Course is a live activity consisting of a variety of sessions in didactic lecture, question and answer sessions and case-based interactive presentations. Overall, this variety of learning formats will allow learners to receive information from leading experts in important topic areas. Further, the structure and format of the course will provide learners with opportunities to engage with and learn from their colleagues. The case presentations are designed to provide learners with tangible examples that they might face in their own professional practice.  Further, panel discussions provide a forum for discussing key components of orthopedic densitometry.

This activity was developed with the support of an educational donation provided by Amgen.

    Target Audience

The ISCD Orthopedic Densitometry Course is designed for healthcare professionals with an interest in orthopedics, osteoporosis, and bone health across the lifespan, including those working in orthopedics, radiology and diagnostic imaging, physical and occupational therapy, public health, and research. These include physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, radiology technologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

Osteoporosis is a common problem that causes your bones to become abnormally thin, weakened, and easily broken (fractured). Fortunately, preventive treatments are available that can help to maintain or increase bone density. If osteoporosis has been diagnosed, therapies are available that can slow further loss of bone or increase bone density. The trend of under-diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis continues to occur despite the fact that effective therapy exists to reduce future fractures. This gap in treatment and diagnosis of osteoporosis could lead to an epidemic of new fractures. Clinicians and healthcare professionals must be familiar with and aware of new and current therapeutic agents to treat fracture risk and osteoporosis. They must know how to initiate proper treatment based on clinical assessment and published guidelines. The dissemination of evidence-based information on the balance of benefit and risk could help to reduce the treatment gap and improve patient health. Clinicians and other members of the healthcare team may be unfamiliar with the WHO’s definition of osteoporosis, understand the presence of fragility fracture warrants pharmacological intervention and the role of FRAX in the treatment intervention of osteoporosis.

    Learning Objectives

After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:

    1. Understand various pharmacological treatments available and treatment algorithms.
    2. Understand and implement the recommendation of the four “pillars”.
    3. Describe the principles of using DXA as a monitoring tool and understand which densitometric method to use.

    Method of Participation

This activity will be offered through Zoom, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on September 9 & 16, 2025. At the end of the activity, learners will be asked to evaluate the activity online and then claim credit and print certificates. Participants will have 90 days from the activity end date to complete the activity survey and claim continuing education credit.

      Course Description

This ISCD Orthopedic Osteoporosis and Densitometry Course is a live activity consisting of a variety of sessions in didactic lectures, question and answer sessions and case-based interactive presentations.

Clinicians and other members of the healthcare team may be unfamiliar with the WHO’s definition osteoporosis; understand the presence of fragility fracture warrants pharmacological intervention and the role of FRAX in the treatment intervention of osteoporosis.

      Learning Objectives

After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:

      1. Describe the principles of DXA including indications, interpretation, monitoring and potential pitfalls.
      2. Utilize advanced densitometry techniques such as trabecular bone score, vertebral fracture assessment, and opportunistic CT in clinical practice.
      3. Ensure all fragility fracture patients receive secondary fracture care.
      4. Screen elective surgery patients over age 50 years for poor bone health and provide access to osteoporosis care if warranted.
      5. Understand various pharmacological treatments available and treatment algorithms.
      6. Understanding the importance of sarcopenia, frailty, fall risk assessment and fall prevention.

      Method of Participation

This activity will be offered in person in Boston, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on February 22, 2025. Learners will be asked to complete a post-course survey to indicate what they will change in their practice as a result of this activity.

      2. Identify the most appropriate and reproducible sites for densitometry in children and adolescents.

      3. Evaluate technical aspects of bone assessment in children and adolescents.

      4. Describe the uses of measurement tools for acquiring bone densitometry assessments by DXA and other modalities.

      5. Summarize the elements to be included in a pediatric DXA report.

      Method of Participation

This activity will be offered in person in Boston, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on February 22, 2025. Learners will be asked to complete a post-course survey to indicate what they will change in their practice as a result of this activity.
