Dr. Crandall is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed her M.D. degree, her internal medicine residency, and her Master of Science in Clinical Research degree at UCLA. Dr. Crandall has been on faculty at the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women’s Health Center at UCLA since the clinic’s opening in 1995. In addition to providing osteoporosis consultations, frequently lectures to physicians and medical students regarding osteoporosis . She is an International Society for Clinical Densitometry-certified clinical densitometrist (CCD). Dr. Crandall has authored more than 200 articles and book chapters. Most of her research focuses on osteoporosis epidemiology and osteoporosis screening strategies among postmenopausal women. Her sentinel work in this area includes comparing the ability of the various risk calculators to distinguish between women who do and do not experience fractures in the subsequent 10 years, as well as comparing the ability of the risk calculators to distinguish between women who do and do not have osteoporosis on bone density testing. Most recently, she published a nationwide U.S. study that compared baseline and serial bone mineral density scans for predicting incident fractures among postmenopausal women. She was lead author of an Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality (AHRQ) review regarding comparative safety and effectiveness of osteoporosis drug therapy. Dr. Crandall is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). She was honored with a Mastership in the American College of Physicians. She is currently Vice-Chair of the American College of Physicians Clinical Guidelines Committee. She sits on the Council (Board) of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. She is the Scientific Chair of the Women’s Health Initiative Study’s Bone Scientific Interest Group and serves on the Women’s Health Initiative Steering Committee.
