Activity Description

Serial and combination treatment in osteoporosis.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the objectives in osteoporosis treatment and differentiate between approved pharmacologic agents.
  2. Describe the importance of sequencing osteoporosis treatments.
  3. Explain the justification for using osteoanabolic agents as initial treatment for osteoporosis.

Instructions:

Clinicians and Technologists are required to answer a set of online test questions following the review of the video and will have up to three attempts to answer questions correctly before losing credit for the activity. Once the activity test has been passed (75% or higher), you will be asked to evaluate the activity online and then be allowed to claim credit and print certificates.

Andrea J. Singer, MD, FACP CCD, is Director of Women’s Primary Care, Director of the Bone Densitometry Program, and Medical Director of the Fracture Liaison Service focusing on secondary fracture prevention at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. She holds a dual appointment in the Departments of Medicine and Obstetrics at Gynecology at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC. Dr. Singer earned her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. She completed her internship and residency, including serving as Chief Resident, at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Singer is Chief Medical Officer at the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (formerly the National Osteoporosis Foundation) and has been a member of the Board of Trustees. She co-chairs the annual Interdisciplinary Symposium on Osteoporosis for BHOF. Dr Singer has been the principal investigator for several clinical trials and quality improvement projects in osteoporosis and bone health. Her areas of interest include women’s health, osteoporosis management, economic impact of osteoporosis, secondary fracture prevention, menopause, and sexual health, and she has authored numerous publications in in peer-reviewed journals including Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Osteoporosis International, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Current Medical Research Opinion, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, among others, as well as book chapters and online publications. She is Section Editor for Bone Health in Journal of Women’s Health, a member of the Editorial Board of Osteoporosis: Clinical Updates, and Reviewer for Osteoporosis International, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Journal of Sexual Medicine.
