Course Description
The Pediatric Bone Densitometry Course provides current research and best-practice techniques for the acquisition and interpretation of bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents. This educational program is designed to improve learner competence in pediatric bone densitometry. By completing this course, attendees will gain conceptual and practical knowledge which can be applied in their professional practices.
Target Audience
The content is designed for healthcare providers with an interest in skeletal health assessment, including specialists, generalists and technologists working in family medicine, general and internal medicine, endocrinology, rheumatology, obstetrics/gynecology, radiology, pediatrics, physical and occupational therapy, nuclear medicine and research.
Learning Objectives
After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:
- Recognize considerations and concerns with skeletal assessment in children and adolescents with a variety of medical conditions.
- Identify the most appropriate and reproducible sites for densitometry in children and adolescents.
- Evaluate technical aspects of bone assessment in children and adolescents.
- Describe the uses of measurement tools for acquiring bone densitometry assessments by DXA and other modalities.
- Summarize the elements to be included in a pediatric DXA report.
Method of Participation
This activity will be offered through Zoom, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on November 6, 2027. The course will NOT be recorded for future viewing, so attendees must be present during the scheduled times. At the end of the activity, learners will be asked to evaluate the activity online and then claim credit and print certificates. Senior Consultant, Paediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Bone Disease
Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, India
Honorary Consultant, Paediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Bone Disease, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Birmingham, UK
Honorary Clinical Associate Professor, University of Birmingham, UK
Dr Uday graduated in medicine (MBBS) from India in 2004. She completed her paediatric and higher specialist training in Paediatric Endocrinology in the UK, with dedicated training in metabolic bone disease at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital (BWCH). She completed her PhD at the University of Birmingham on a Global Challenges Scholarship. Her research spans public health aspects of vitamin D supplementation through to deep phenotyping of rickets and osteomalacia, using techniques such as bone histology, histomorphometry, bone mineralisation density distribution (BMDD) and bone mechanics. Her clinical expertise covers metabolic bone disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, skeletal dysplasias and paediatric bone densitometry. During her substantive consultant post at BWCH, she led the nationally commissioned highly specialised osteogenesis imperfecta service and the metabolic bone service, and established a complex skeletal dysplasia multidisciplinary clinic. In 2025 she returned to India to establish a metabolic bone service with a paediatric DXA service of international standard, which is rare in the country, giving her experience of developing paediatric bone services in both high-income and low- and middle-income settings. She is also a trustee of the Indian Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, working to improve standards of care and access to multidisciplinary care for children with osteogenesis imperfecta across India.
She has received several awards, including the ESPE Young Investigator Award, the ISCBH New Investigator Award and the BWCH Clinical Excellence Award. She is Chief Editor of a forthcoming Elsevier textbook on disorders of rickets and osteomalacia in childhood. Within the ISCD, she is a member of the Digital Learning Committee and an expert member of the Position Development Conference.
