Course Description

The Pediatric Bone Densitometry Course provides current research and best-practice techniques for the acquisition and interpretation of bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents. This educational program is designed to improve learner competence in pediatric bone densitometry. By completing this course, attendees will gain conceptual and practical knowledge which can be applied in their professional practices.


Target Audience

The content is designed for healthcare providers with an interest in skeletal health assessment, including specialists, generalists and technologists working in family medicine, general and internal medicine, endocrinology, rheumatology, obstetrics/gynecology, radiology, pediatrics, physical and occupational therapy, nuclear medicine and research.


Learning Objectives

After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:

1. Recognize considerations and concerns with skeletal assessment in children and adolescents with a variety of medical conditions.

2. Identify the most appropriate and reproducible sites for densitometry in children and adolescents.

3. Evaluate technical aspects of bone assessment in children and adolescents.

4. Describe the uses of measurement tools for acquiring bone densitometry assessments by DXA and other modalities.

5. Summarize the elements to be included in a pediatric DXA report.


Method of Participation

This activity will be offered through Zoom, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on February 7, 2024. At the end of the activity, learners will be asked to evaluate the activity online and then claim credit and print certificates. Participants will have 90 days from the activity end date to complete the activity survey and claim continuing education credit.

Cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the start of the course will not be refunded.

Halley Wasserman, MD, MS, CCD

Assistant Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

Halley Wasserman is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of pediatric endocrinology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where she also serves as the Director of the Calcium and Metabolic Bone Disorders Center. Her clinical and research interests include optimizing care for children with disuse osteoporosis and other forms of skeletal fragility and is leading a pilot study to assess bone turnover markers in youth with chronic immobility. She serves as a consultant on NIH funded research to study bone health in transgender youth and is the principal investigator of a clinical trial assessing the effects of transdermal estrogen on bone, cognition, and mental health in adolescent females with premature ovarian insufficiency. Dr. Wasserman has co-authored 14 original research articles and 3 invited reviews. She was a member of the 2019 ISCD Position Development Conference Pediatric Task Force and is currently leading the development of a pediatric bone Learning Health Network. Outside of academia, she enjoys reading historical fiction, gardening, baseball, and spending time with her husband and three children.

Heidi Kecskemethy, MS Ed, RDN, CSP, CBDT

Director of Radiology Research Operations

Nemours Children's Health

Heidi Kecskemethy, MS Ed, RDN, CSP, LDN, CBDT is the Director of Radiology Research Operations and is a Clinical Research Scientist in the Department of Radiology at Nemours Children’s Health in Wilmington, DE, USA. She has been certified by the ISCD since 2002, has served on various committees, has served on two Pediatric Positions Development Committees (2013 and 2019), and is currently serving on the Board of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Her scientific expertise is in pediatric nutrition and bone densitometry, with emphasis on bone assessment in patients with neuromuscular disabilities. She regularly presents at national and international meetings and has traveled the world providing instruction to healthcare professionals on pediatric bone assessment and the lateral distal femur DXA technique. She serves as a resource and educator for clinicians and researchers, providing guidance on pediatric bone density assessment and quality, and the conduct and design of human subject research. Heidi is also a Registered Dietitian with Board Certification in Pediatric Nutrition and has authored or co-authored 34 peer-reviewed papers and 8 book chapters.
