This course focuses on increasing the knowledge and competence of clinicians and other healthcare professionals to help them successfully use DXA body composition analysis in the management of obesity, geriatric sarcopenia and other low muscle mass states, general health and pediatric skeletal disease. The inclusion of case studies will reinforce the knowledge gained and allow for application in the diagnosis, treatment and therapies of patients presenting with low bone mineral density.
The content is designed for healthcare providers responsible for reading and interpreting DXA scans, including specialists and generalists working in family medicine, general and internal medicine, rheumatology, endocrinology, obstetrics/gynecology, radiology, physical and occupational therapy, and research, as well as technologists.
After attending the course, participants should be better prepared to:
- Identify proper DXA technology for body composition analysis of fat, lean muscle and bone mass.
- List other methods of body composition analysis used in the clinical setting.
- Differentiate reference values and indices.
- Identify limitations of reference values and indices.
- Summarize scan acquisition for adult and pediatric patients.
Method of Participation
This activity will be offered through zoom, allowing the learner to watch and ask questions in a live format on November 4, 2023. At the end of the activity, learners will be asked to evaluate the activity online and then claim credit and print certificates. Participants will have 90 days from the activity end date to complete the activity survey and claim continuing education credit.

Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Adam Kuchnia is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and holds a joint appointment within the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public health. The overall goal of his laboratory is to use a translational research approach to understand the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis and the clinical implications of myosteatosis (i.e. muscle quality), or the infiltration of fat within muscle tissue, in aging and age-related disease. He has expertise in various imaging modalities for the assessment of muscle and in protein/muscle metabolism. Currently, his research focuses on human nutrition, in vivo lean tissue/muscle imaging and ex vivo measures to assess muscle and metabolic dysfunction. Adam is particularly interested in novel applications to refine protein recommendations with the goal of preserving muscle mass and muscle quality, while preventing consequential outcomes seen in aging and age-related disease. His research also aims to develop novel, noninvasive methods to accurately detect muscle wasting and myosteatosis and monitor changes in skeletal muscle while optimizing therapeutic intervention throughout medical treatment and surgery, including chemotherapy/immunotherapy and transplantation.

John Shepherd is a Researcher/Professor at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, a Fulbright Scholar and an expert in mining biomarkers from medical imaging using advanced machine learning techniques; Co-I San Francisco Mammography Registry 1999-2018; PI of the NIH-funded 3-Component Breast Imaging Study; Director of the Artificial Intelligence Precision Health Institute, the Body Composition Exercise Physiology and Energy Metabolism CORE lab, and the Shepherd Research Lab; 2017 President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry; ISCD’s John Bilezikian Global Leadership and Oscar Gluck Humanitarian Awards for his IAEA contributions. He has chaired 10 international workshops on quantitative imaging and has over 200 peer-reviewed publications that have been referenced over 10,000 times.
