Expires 9/14/2027: Chronic Kidney Disease - Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) is a complex disorder of bone and mineral metabolism that affects all patients with CKD, in particular as kidney dysfunction worsens. Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases, Washington University School of Medicine
Dr. Nickolas is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Dr. Nickolas received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and in Nephrology at Columbia University. His primary interests are in the skeletal effects of kidney diseases. His lab focuses on redefining our understanding of and approach to bone disease in adults and children with kidney failure. He uses advanced and novel methods to phenotype the characteristics of bone and mineral diseases in CKD patients.

Participants will examine how AI-driven quality-control processes and automated region-of-interest detection can enhance measurement consistency, workflow efficiency, and scalability across clinical settings. Professor/Chief Scientific Officer
University of Hawaii Cancer Center, Honolulu, HI
Dr. Shepherd is a Researcher/Professor at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, a Fulbright Scholar, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and a former President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. He received his PhD in Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia and then completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biophysics at Princeton University. From there he went on to develop body composition and bone density algorithms for a major women’s health company and his patents are the basis for the accuracy of that company’s body composition algorithms. He then joined the Radiology Department of the University of California San Francisco and led his own research group for 19 years studying a wide variety of biomarkers for breast cancer, obesity and osteoporosis from medical imaging using advanced machine learning techniques. For the past 5 years, he has been with the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and is currently their Chief Scientific Officer. He also directs the UH Artificial Intelligence Precision Health Institute and the Hawaii Pacific Islands Mammography Registry. He has been continuously funded from the NIH since 2005, led 6 R01-funded studies, published over 350 peer-review publications that have been referenced over 23,000 times, and lastly is an avid surfer and island ridge hiker!

- Identify when orthopedic referral or prophylactic fixation should be considered, particularly for incomplete or contralateral atypical femur fractures with symptoms or radiographic abnormalities
- Describe the evaluation and operative management considerations for osteoporotic pelvic ring injuries, including U-type sacral fractures, instability patterns, pain as a marker of instability, and the role of percutaneous screw fixation to improve mobilization

Hospital for Special Surgery
Dr. Kathryn Barth is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of fractures in the upper and lower extremities, pelvis, and acetabulum. She has expertise in both operative and non-operative management of complex peri-articular fractures and post-traumatic problems such as deformity and non-unions (non-healing fractures).
Dr. Barth graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania while graduating with honors in her major in Health & Societies: Health Care Markets & Finance and completing premedical requirements. She attended the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL where she graduated summa cum laude and was awarded the Clare Geigerich Award for Outstanding Promise in Orthopaedic Surgery. She was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society. She went on to complete her residency training in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery where she served in leadership roles and received the Distinguished Housestaff Award upon graduation. She then completed a year-long fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, one of the top training programs for orthopaedic trauma surgery in the country. She has also spent time abroad during her training learning about the reconstruction of complex traumatic injuries and non-unions at the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital in Australia and Korea University Guru Hospital in Seoul, South Korea.
Dr. Barth is also passionate about improving the care of trauma patients through clinical outcomes research. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and presented research at numerous national research meetings. She is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA).

- Describe the key anatomic and imaging features of pediatric metabolic bone disease, including the roles of the physis, zone of provisional calcification, metaphysis, epiphysis, and periosteum in endochondral and intramembranous ossification.
- Differentiate common pediatric metabolic bone disorders on imaging, including rickets, renal osteodystrophy, hypophosphatasia, scurvy, osteogenesis imperfecta, lead toxicity, osteopetrosis, Gaucher disease, and mucopolysaccharidoses.
- Apply radiographic patterns to clinical diagnosis and management considerations, including recognizing disease distribution, distinguishing metabolic bone disease from trauma or non-accidental injury, and minimizing radiation exposure during pediatric imaging.

Attending Radiologist
Hospital for Special Surgery
Dr. Jaramillo is a pediatric radiologist specialized in imaging musculoskeletal disorders in children. He began his career as a pediatric radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. From 2004 to 2015 he was Radiologist-in-Chief and Van Alen Chair of Radiology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has been a Vice Chair of Radiology at Stanford University and the Interim Chair of Radiology at Columbia University. He is currently the Director of Pediatric Imaging at the Hospital for Special Surgery and a Professor of Radiology at the Weill Cornell College of Medicine. He has been the President and Board Chair of the Society for Pediatric Radiology. His research has focused on the study of growth disorders using novel imaging technologies, mainly MRI-based, with both basic and transIational approaches. He has been the principal investigator of 3 major grants from the NIH. His current research focuses on studies of skeletal growth using diffusion tensor imaging of the physeal cartilage and newly formed metaphyseal bone, a technique he developed. He has published more than 170 peer reviewed publications and more than 100 reviews, chapters and case reports.

Michael Lewiecki, MD, CCD, FACP, FACE, FASBMR, is Director of New Mexico Clinical Research & Osteoporosis Center and Director of Bone Health ECHO at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, NM. His is a consultant in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, supervisor and interpreter of bone density studies, and an educator with a special interest in the evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. He has been principal investigator for many osteoporosis clinical trials and is author of over 300 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, as well as books, book chapters, and online publications on osteoporosis. Dr. Lewiecki is past-president of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) and current president of the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico (OFNM). He is an editor for Osteoporosis International, and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and the Journal of Clinical Densitometry. He has received national and international awards that include the 2021 “Dr. John P. Bilezikian ISCD Global Leadership Award” and the 2021 “Lawrence G. Raisz Memorial Lecture Award” with the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation. Dr. Lewiecki is the program director of the annual Santa Fe Bone Symposium, the flagship activity of the OFNM.

- Develop a differential diagnosis for abnormal bone density, including causes of increased bone density such as Paget disease, osteoblastic metastases, myelofibrosis, fluorosis, renal osteodystrophy, and osteopetrosis, as well as causes of decreased bone density such as osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, osteogenesis imperfecta, and steroid-related bone loss.
- Identify metabolic bone disease mimics and high-risk diagnoses that should not be missed, including pathologic compression fractures, multiple myeloma, osteoid osteoma, occult osteoporotic hip fractures, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, and hemorrhagic soft tissue sarcoma.

Dr. Kevin Math is a musculoskeletal radiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, primarily involved with imaging of bone, joint and soft tissue pathology and injuries. His main clinical focus is imaging of metabolic bone disease in addition imaging of sports injuries, joint replacements and performing musculoskeletal interventional procedures. He is the Director of Bone Densitometry and routinely utilizes DXA and other imaging modalities for diagnosis of metabolic bone disease and assisting clinicians in the care of their patients.
Dr. Math is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and is also very involved with resident and fellow education at his hospital.

Dr. Bredella is Associate Dean for Translational Science and Director and Principle Investigator of the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Institute at NYU Langone Health. She is also a musculoskeletal radiologist and the Bernard and Irene Schwartz Professor of Radiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and vice chair for strategy in the Department of Radiology at NYU. She holds an MBA from MIT/Sloan School of Management.
Dr. Bredella is an NIH-funded physician scientist focusing on novel functional imaging techniques to determine the effects of body composition and different fat depots on bone and cardiometabolic risk with a special focus on sex differences. She has advanced the adoption of opportunistic imaging, repurposing CT scans performed for routine clinical care, to evaluate bone health into clinical practice. Dr. Bredella is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts and multiple textbooks. She is a Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence of the National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. She is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy of Radiology Research and the Presidents Medal of the International Skeletal Society.

- Apply least significant change and reference targets to determine whether a patient is responding to osteoporosis therapy.
- Use bone turnover markers to monitor adherence, treatment response, and offset of effect after oral bisphosphonate therapy.

Dr. Gustavo Duque, MD, PhD, FRACP, is a geriatrician and biomedical scientist with a research interest in the mechanisms, potential therapies, and biomarkers for age-related bone loss, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, osteosarcopenia, and frailty in older persons. He also studies the effects of vitamin D, exercise, and protein intake on bone and muscle mass.
His initial training included Internal Medicine at Javeriana University (Colombia) and Geriatric Medicine, which he completed at McGill University in Montreal (Canada). He obtained his PhD at McGill University in 2003 with a thesis entitled “Molecular Changes of the Aging Osteoblast” under the supervision of Dr. Richard Kremer. Between 2003 and November 2007, he joined the McGill University Medical School faculty as a member of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and as a Researcher at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research.
In November 2007, he moved to Australia to join the faculty as Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Musculoskeletal Ageing Research Program at Sydney Medical School Nepean, University of Sydney. In 2012, he was promoted to Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney. Between 2015 and 2022, Dr. Duque held the positions of Chair of Medicine and Director of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science at the University of Melbourne.
In 2022, Dr. Duque assumed the roles of Full Professor, Dr. Joseph Kaufmann Chair in Geriatric Medicine, Director of the RUISSS McGill Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health of Seniors/Simone & Edouard Shouela (CEDurable), and Principal Investigator in the Bone, Muscle & Geroscience Group at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, one of the official journals of the Gerontological Society of America. In 2025, he became Director of the McGill Division of Geriatric Medicine.
As a geriatrician and clinician-investigator, Dr. Duque has implemented several Falls and Fractures clinics—including the most recent at the McGill University Health Centre and the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal—where patients are comprehensively assessed for fall and fracture risk. His clinical trials unit conducts multiple studies evaluating pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for age-related musculoskeletal diseases. He is the author of more than 360 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters and has edited five books in the aging and musculoskeletal fields, including two on osteosarcopenia.

Dr. Richard Eastell is a Professor and Head of the Academic Unit of Bone Metabolism at the University of Sheffield–Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Director of the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research in Sheffield, UK. He is an internationally recognized expert in osteoporosis, bone metabolism, and bone turnover markers.
Professor Eastell holds several prestigious positions including National Institute for Health Research Senior Investigator Emeritus status and serves on the International Osteoporosis Foundation Committee of Scientific Advisors. He has held leadership roles with the European Calcified Tissue Society (Program Co-Chair), serves as Treasurer for IBMS, and sits on editorial boards for Endocrine Reviews and Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. He also serves as Senior Editor for the journal Bone.

Osteoporosis Clinical Research Program - University of Wisconsin, Madison
Diane Krueger received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is an ISCD-certified clinical densitometrist and a certified clinical research coordinator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. She has been program manager of the University of Wisconsin Osteoporosis Clinical Research Program since its inception in 1993 and researcher since 2021. Ms. Krueger has extensive clinical research experience in osteoporosis and bone densitometry, having coordinated multiple industry and investigator-initiated studies. In collaboration with the UW Osteoporosis Program, she has published over 100 manuscripts. Her service with ISCD has included serving as Technologist Bone Densitometry Course faculty since 2006 and chairing the related Update Committee in addition to the Annual Meeting Committee. In her leadership capacity, she has served as Education Council chair, Executive Committee and Board. Additionally, she held several officer positions including Secretary and four Presidential seats.
